In my last post, I mentioned getting hired to co-direct a feature. This morning, I was asked to take on the entirety of the directing responsibilities for the project. It's a heck of a promotion, and one I'm very excited about. This marks the first time I'm wearing the director's hat on a feature project that I did not originate.
The film is called "A Glimpse of the Soul", produced, written by and starring Reid Taylor.
I've already had some technical meetings with the DP, Scott Baker, to define the visual approach to the film. It's a "bottle show" -- a story that takes place entirely in the confines of one location -- so we have to be very intentional about how we shoot it. Too 'passive' a camera, and the narrative can lose its momentum.
Now that the actors and their performances have been added to my range of responsibilities, I'm excited to start working with them. Already this morning, Reid and I began to break apart his character's rhythms, finding meaningful expressions of his isolation and grief in the details of his day-to-day. Soon, I hope to schedule a table read for the cast and crew. With luck, we'll learn much more about the story we're telling, and find many ways to improve the way we tell it.
Production is scheduled for mid-August, so there's some time to prepare.
