About to Start Production on "A Glimpse of the Soul"

I'm about to go to bed. Tomorrow morning, bright and early, I'll drive to the set of "A Glimipse of the Soul", a feature film I'm directing that's shooting in Sherman Oaks. I'm very excited about this film, but also appreciative of the way in which I'm excited about it. Unlike earlier projects of mine, this one isn't my first film, nor is it my first feature - it doesn't feel like the first anything, really. It seems as though with every passing project, the pressure to "make a splash" diminishes a little. The more films I make, the more I feel like I've got more of 'em in me to make. With less of that emotional pressure, I feel like I was able to really focus on the preparations for this one. The storyboards are thorough, I've got a detailed shot-list for tomorrow (which is something I have yet to see on a film that's not my own... I know they exist, but the films I've worked on haven't included them) and I even had some time to rehearse with some of the actors over the last couple of days. It's still early in the arc of my career, but I don't feel like I need to make a point with this film. For the first time (and maybe this is a first!) I'm making a feature because that's my profession, not because I'm trying to make it my profession. I'm looking forward to getting up in the morning and going to work.

  1. Boy, I remember that shot list. In the midst of fast-moving semi-chaos, it makes the actor feel a little better that yes, there is a plan. Break legs!
